2015 NFL Draft Day 2 Recap/Day 3 Preview

Experts were saying that they expected to see an increase in activity with trades during Day 2 and it lived up to expectations.  There were a total of 22 trades in rounds 2 &3, 11 in each round.  Day 2 also had surprising player slides come to an end and had teams more willing to take a risk on players with questionable character.  Lets look at the more interesting parts of Round 2 and 3.

ROUND 2
If Round 1 was looked at as fairly predictable, then Round 2 was its polar opposite.  The Giants kicked things off by trading up and filling a need at SS.  The Buccaneers showed they are serious about protecting Winston by taking Donovan Smith and Ali Marpet.  While the effort is applauded the players picked are questionable given the other options available.  I love the Jags pick of TJ Yeldon because he is the big back compliment to DRob and his skill set fits well into the Jags' zone blocking scheme.  The Redskins drafted one of my favorite players in the draft in Preston Smith.  Its unfortunate that he will have to play out of position in either an OLB rush role or a 3-4 DE.  The Chicago Bears made a very questionable pick in Eddie Goldman.  This isnt so much because Goldman's play is questionable but rather the glaring needs at positions other than DT.   There was a mini run on linebackers in the middle of the round and while the Vikings and Chargers got steals in Eric Kendricks and Denzel Perryman; the Texans and Saints will be hoping the picks Benardrick McKinney and Hau'oli Kikaha dont come back to haunt them.  The end of the 2nd round seemed like the landing spot for troubled but talented players.  The Dallas Cowboys selected Randy Gregory at #60 and will pair him up with their other troubled DE Greg Hardy.  While the buzz was still fresh about the Gregory drafting,  the Seahawks used their pick on Frank Clark.  Clark brings some luggage but fits the Seattle mold of athletic and physical pass rusher.

ROUND 3

Round 3 started off with a run on offensive players with 11 of the first 13 taken being on the offensive side of the ball.  The Jags continued their excellent draft by selecting AJ Cann 67th overall.  The Seahawks filled multiple needs by drafting WR-Tyler Lockett.  The Bears continued to make questionable picks by drafting Hroniaa Grasu.  Drafting an OC here doesnt lend the value as some other players may have in this spot.  The Falcons needed a feature back and they got one in Tevin Coleman.  The Chiefs selected speedster WR Conley despite the fact that KC only threw the ball over 20 yards 26 times all year long.  The Jets got a physical and relentless edge rusher in Lorenzo Maulidin.  Two of the best value picks in the draft came when the Vikings drafted Danielle Hunter and the Ravens selected Carl Davis.  Washington raised a few eyebrows by drafting RB Matt Jones toward the end of the round.  The round wrapped up with the Bengals filling a need and getting good value by selecting Paul Dawson.

Day 3
Looking ahead to Day 3 I still cant believe my guys; Derron Smith, Bryce Hagar, TJ Clemmings, Grady Jarrett, Bryce Petty, Jay Ajayi, Blake Bell and Kenny Bell are still available.  With talent still on the board I expect teams to gobble up the best players in a hurry.  Here are my best players available going into the final rounds of the NFL draft:

NFL Draft Day 1 Recap

For the most part Day 1 of the NFL Draft was uneventful.  The days leading up to the draft provided all the fireworks we needed with some player's draft stock falling and rumors swirling about teams trying desperately to get the #2 pick.  After it all shook out the reshuffled top 10 all were taken about where they were expected.  The only picks that raised your eyebrows slightly was Leonard Willams slipping a little to #6 to the Jets and Todd Gurley going #10 to the Rams.  The Gurley pick is a non issue for me because he the most talented back we have seen in a while, but some may say it is a reach.  The best picks were had by the Chicago Bears and Washington Redskins.  The Tennessee Titans took Marcus Mariota despite having many holes on the roster and the knowledge that Mariota is a year or two away from making an impact.

The middle of the round was much like the top of the first, slow and steady.  But we did get our first trade of the day when San Diego moved up to #15 and San Francisco went to #17.  Although they got a great player in Gordon you have to wonder if they didn't have to move up to get him.  San Fran has Hyde and Houston still has Foster, so taking Gordon may have been unlikely by them.  The Bengals may have made the sneakiest move of draft by snatching up Cedric Ogbuehi before any other team could.  If his knee holds up he might be the best pick if the draft a few years from now.

The latter part of the draft was probably the most interesting of the day.  The Broncos traded up to #23 and had to part with an important piece of their offensive line, Manny Ramirez, to do so.  They ended up taking Shane Ray despite the character concerns. With Ray, Miller and Ware on the roster the Broncos have a scary pass rush game.  There were a few questionable picks with Phillip Dorsett going to the Colts and Stephone Anthony going to the Saints.  However, the worst pick has to go to the Carolina Panthers.  With all the holes on their team the Panthers took OLB-Shaq Thompson.  Value pick of the day has to be the New England Patriots getting Malcolm Brown at the end of the 1st round.  There is still a ton of talent available in Day 2.  Here is a look at some of my top guys:
